JEWS IN AMERICA FROM THE 1940’S TO THE PRESENT

We will begin with the first Jewish Miss America, who was crowned in 1945 and continue with an account of the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust. We will continue with an examination of Zionism & Israel; the 1950’s with the move to the suburbs; the development of Conservative Judaism and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah; and Socialism, Communism, the Rosenbergs, and the McCarthy Era. We will move to the 1960’s and the Civil Rights Movement, Feminism, and the plight of Soviet Jews. We will conclude with Jewish Renewal, Jewish Pop, and the choices pertaining to assimilation versus Jewish Identity.
