Saturday, August 31
7:00 p.m. - Dessert Reception
7:30 p.m. - Selichot Program: "Hava Nagila" (The Movie)
8:30 p.m. - Selichot Service
"Selichot" means forgiveness, theme for the High Holy Days. The Selichot Service introduces the High Holy Day season and helps us prepare our hearts and minds for the holy days ahead. It is also the time when we change our Torah covers to white in anticipation of the High Holy Days.
For our Selichot program, we will watch the documentary, "Hava Nagila," a film about the tune that has followed Jews historically from the shtels of Easern Europe to the kubitz of newly-independent Israel to the neighborhoods of America. It brings hope in times of despair and teaches the importance of moving on to a better tomorrow, a theme in our High Holy Day season.
Following the movie, our clergy will lead a discussion on issues seen in the film.
After the reception and the program, we will proceed to the sanctuary for our Selichot Service at 8:30 p.m.
